We had discussed ‘random accusation’ as one which is unsubstantiated, arbitrary or unfounded claim of wrongdoing made against someone without evidence. Yet even though we tried explaining Job’s case in the context of random accusation, another propounding theory says that, it was not a random accusation but rather, a legal argument. The literature explains a legal argument as, organized, planned and an ordered, coherent speech or statement made by a lawyer in defense of his client.
Why was the enemy’s statement ‘does Job fear God for nothing’ not a random accusation but a legal argument? Remember that, it was the devil that was finding fault with Job therefore he needs to make a valid case. The Sons of God had gathered and the devil also appeared to present his case (Job 2:1). The devil had to get his facts right to find himself credible to argue when the sons of God gathered.
The devil is an organized devil that is why when we meet at church, he is right there in our midst. In fact that gathering about Job’s righteousness is a perfect scenario of the statement ‘wherever two or three are gathered together in His name, there He is in our midst’. When we gather in church, the devil is there. The disruption of sound, heavy atmosphere, persons sleeping whiles the message is being preached and your offense at the message itself is a sign of the presence of Satan at church. So the devil is organized because he knows when and where to present his case.
The devil planned with his cohorts to appear when the Sons of God gathers because the occasion is right to raise an accusation or make his argument. He was orderly in his presentation because, he was precise with the issue for which he thought ‘Job does not fear God for nothing’. The devil was spiritually knowledgeable of the hedge so he argued for God to remove the hedge so he could go directly at Job. We can confidently say therefore that, the devil did not just pick on any issue by chance. He made a calculated case that challenged God to move His hand once again against Job.
Look at yourself today. You are successful. A good job, a nice apartment, money is coming and your marriage is good. Everything is just going for you. As far as you’re concerned, you have paid the price for the good life you are living today. No one expects that things could turn sour someday. And that’s why when disaster strikes in some homes, the couple think life is unfair or cruel. Job was enjoying the same life you had yet, he was attacked. What makes the argument legal?
You see, Christianity without test is no Christianity. You have to be tested to come of age. You may have gone through your greatest test already. You came from a poverty-stricken home and you lived at the mercy of people to finish your education. Money was difficult to come by and you had to live through the reproach of asking people until you graduated. Some of your bills are still outstanding to be cleared with the hope of a credible job later in life. As a lady, your dignity was at stake in getting that lucrative job. For this, you felt getting a good man to marry, a good paying job and cash is a compensation for the pain you went through.
If you lose that job, at a certain point, lost your marriage and your finances were attacked, it can be a situation that could be very difficult for you to understand. No two ways about it. But remember that, the devil went to make a legal argument about you to God that, God has placed a hedge around your life and belongings and blessed the work of your hands (Job 1:9-10) the reason you are untouchable. The devil says, God should break his own law or covenant of protecting you and see if you will not curse Him (verse 11). The argument of the incident in your heart and your inability to understand that, this experience is a special case has led to your murmuring.
God knows the damage that removal of the hedge will cause but he went ahead and removed it because, his gracious Hand was going to sustain you. Yes, Satan’s said the truth that something contributed to your protection. It was the truth but foul in a way because removal of the hedge can destroy to the raptures and to ruins and God ideally wouldn’t have risked it if the devil had not argued. The hedge is what God uses as a final protection for the believer just as a fence for a military base. The removal means there are no defenses and the soldiers and the believer must involve the enemy in an open fight for survival. It is not an impossible war to win but it takes the knife’s edge attack for survival. You have to engage in the battle of your life and fight the enemy extremely to have victory.
